{Road Trip USA} Maine Recipe: Blueberry Muffins

Did you know that Maine is the largest producer of wild blueberries, with an estimated 90 million pounds being harvested each year. That’s a big number but the crazy part is that, due to the rough terrain in Maine, the majority of the berries are harvested by hand. (Glad that isn’t my job. Sounds like a lot of work.)

Waking up to fresh blueberry muffins doesn’t sound too bad though.

WP_20140816_001The recipe included with the RTUSA Curriculum made a HUGE batch of muffins. We all ate our share, took 2 platefuls to our neighbors and still have enough leftover to snack on and for breakfast tomorrow!

Other cool facts I learned about Maine this week?

90% of Maine is covered in evergreen forests, hence it’s nickname.

The first chewing gum was made here.

Maine has more lighthouses than any other state in the US.

Like they say, you learn something new everyday.
