Advent Activity Calendar

Every since Natali was about 3 years old, we have been using an “Advent Activity Calendar” to countdown the days until Christmas. I was looking for a way to spend more quality time with my family, during the rush and running of the holiday season.

When we started, we did small activities. Most of them were things we would normally do, but had gotten push aside because of all the other events going on during the winter months. Nowadays, we do some bigger activities and some smaller and simple activities.
I’m not going to lie, my husband isn’t crazy about the Advent Activity but he participates and I think he secretly enjoys it.
This year, our activities aren’t nearly as exciting, although most of them are the same as previous years. I was wondering why the kids weren’t as excited and the only thing I can come up with is the fact that we are spending so much MORE quality time together this year (through homeschooling) that the events aren’t unusual. So, I’ve opted to put in more “Spend the day with_____” activities. It’s nice for the girls to get to spend some one-on-one time with family members and it’s nice for me to have a chance to get caught up on stuff around the house while they’re gone.

A few of our activities:

Sleep under the Christmas Tree

Open a gift early

Take a candle-lit bubble bath

Spend the Day with Grandma and Grandpa

Decorate a Gingerbread House

Bake cookies for the neighbors

Do a good deed for a stranger

Enjoy a silly story (We used this book, which wasn’t as great as I was hoping…)

Paint your nails with Christmas designs

Make Jesus a Birthday Cake

Play a board game

Go skating

Enjoy a pizza picnic under the Christmas Tree

Go look at lights

Hot Cocoa and a Christmas movie

Go ice-skating

Make Christmas ornaments

So far, the girls have said that “Sleeping Under the Tree” is their favorite. Of course, I almost didn’t add that to the list, because I thought they would find it silly.

What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
