Happy Groundhog Day!

We learned a lot of interesting things about groundhogs today.

Did you know groundhogs are also known as Whistle Hogs?

Or that their breathing slows from 25 breaths per minute to 1-4 breaths per minute when in hibernation?

Or that they move approximately 700 pounds of fresh dirt when digging one single burrow.

It is estimated that 16 million tons of soil is turned over every year in the state of New York alone.

 How crazy is that!

After learning some random facts, we decided to make woodchuck shadows, using chalk and black construction paper.

Unfortunately, darn ol’ Phil saw his shadow today, so it looks like we’ll be enjoying another 6 weeks of winter. Boo!
